Drowning in Golden Espresso

The Black Wolf of Nalfein.  The Hero of Jang'kai Gap.  Lord Captain of the Blackguard.  High Lord of the Susserlin.  So many titles made it hard to separate the man from myth.  How could one man be so many things?  Countless times, her potential suitors had bowed at the waist and stammered over their praises of the man.  Something that had sealed their fate.  She needed a man confident in himself, confident in his abilities.  They were not.  Still, she found herself wondering if she'd made a mistake.  If she'd accepted one, she wouldn't be so utterly alone now.

He spoke finally and he had her laughing, a smirk touching her lips.  "She's always been persistent.  Sets her eyes on something and that's it." she murmured, fingers brushing a loose tendril out of her face.  Another laugh and she shook her head.  "I doubt she'd devour you.  Not in one sitting, at least.  She's pined after you for centuries.  She'd faint if you'd agreed, I'm sure."

His eyes met hers, molten gold swirling, and she laughed again.  Her hand flew up to cover her mouth but it wasn't quick enough to hide a glimpse of fangs.  She moved to speak but the human returned, a thick layer of gloss slicked on her lips.  Lofting a brow, she shook her head as the girl worked the slice of lemon along the rim of his cup.  A burning sensation filled her chest and her eyes narrowed for a moment, dangerously.

Catching herself, she cleared her throat and looked back at her screen.  What the hell was that?  The waitress walked off and the brunette watched her steal glances at the male out of the corner of her eye.  This wasn't what she needed.  She needed to focus, get these numbers done.  She was ignoring the world but his voice, once again, pulled her away.

Flicking her attention back to the male, a smirk danced on her berry-hued lips.  "Swamped?  Oh, not at all." came her dry words, a slight shake to her head.  "I have two days to finish these numbers for the Council.  Many of our former deities want to be involved.  Jas has been the easiest to work with so far.  Some of them, though, have long list of demands.  Beyond that, the Council has been breathing down my neck about the food and seating.  I have to try and find an amp that has mysteriously disappeared and find enough mages to work on the finale. And to top it all off, two of my assistants walked out on me today."  Pausing to take a deep breath, she looked back at her screen for a moment, tapping away.

"So no, I'm not swamped.  I'm completely drowning."
