Windows to the Soul

Reading had always been one of her favorite past times in Elanthia and it hadn't changed in the hundred years she'd been here.  Now, instead, she chose to read the books left behind from a long forgotten species.  It had taken her a few months to make sense of all the squiggles and some of the sayings but it was well worth it.  In her studies, she'd found that eyes held great importance to them and they were found throughout literature, romanticized to no end, and she loved it.

Eyes are captivatingly beautiful.  She had yet to find something that held her fascination as well as they did.  The molten gold orbs across from her were no different.  His eyes shone with a warm that seemed to say that everything would be alright.  She knew, rationally, that it would.  She was in charge of this giant mess and it would be wonderful in the end just like everything she did.  Meeting his gaze seemed to carry the gravity of her thoughts, however, and as she took her first bite, she averted her own gaze, taking to watching him watch her in her peripheral.

A faint smirk touched her lips as her mouth worked the bite, tongue savoring the taste.  Eyes slid back to his as he spoke about the Snake, amusement touching pursed lips and sparkling eyes.  "He is but we all can be." she murmured, twirling the fork between her fingers.  "Love is a very strong word, Alise."  Her thoughts wandered for a moment, to the darkest recesses were the Serpent lingered, stirring up the fragments of her former life before he saved her, before he delivered her.  "He lets you burn just long enough." came her soft words before she cleared her throat and took another fork full, slipping it between berry stained lips.

Despite her wandering thoughts, she smiled fully, a laugh lifting from her lips.  Her head tilted to the side and she regarded the male for a moment.  "Oh, darling." she began, lightly accented words flowing through the air.  "Do you think I do anything without thinking over the consequences?"  Good humor shone in her features as she shook her head, stealing one last, small bite and popped it in her mouth.

Unfortunately, the last bite should have been held off until she'd argued her point.  Taking the advantage of her mouth being occupied, he continued on as she sat back in the booth.  Elegant fingers laid the fork down before arms crossed over chest and her eyebrow arched as she took in what he was saying.  It wasn't a bad idea, to be sure, to listen to the amps first.  Was the offer of drinks supposed to entice her or was he merely asking her on a date without asking as much?  Her hands ran over her laptop before picking the device up and slipped it into her bag, papers quickly following suit.  Doing up the buckle, she hung the strap on her shoulder and rose to her feet.

"I'll be there at ten, sharp.  Don't be late.  I'm going home to change." she replied, eyes running over his form for a moment before she grabbed her phone and turned to leave.  "I assume you'll show up to our first date in something other than jeans and a t-shirt?"  Without slowing, she tossed enough bills on the counter for the tiramisu, his drink and hers, as well a tip for Strawberry Shortcake.  The bells on the door chimed her exit and she disappeared into the night.
